Day 1 of No Dining Out December – Quit skipping over this post and join in! Hehe.

Posted: 01 Dec 2010 04:53 AM PST

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend however they choose!

The rules:

1. You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habits, you can participate!
2. You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the gift card.
3. The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not.
4. You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
5. Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
6. Here is a thought… consider keeping a tally of what you would of spent this month. For example, if you really want to go out for breakfast this morning and you resist… write that down! You could then donate that money to a food bank or deposit it into your fund!
7. Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here.

My progress:

No dining out for us yesterday. I think we are eating the never ending Thanksgiving leftovers! I will pick the winner for the November over the next few days. :)

How are you doing?

Disney World Training: My top 10 Disney tips

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 06:57 PM PST

I often get asked what my top tips are for Disney World. So if I only had your ear for 10 minutes, this is what I would tell you….

  1. Fastpasses do not expire. Even though they give you a 1 hour return window, you can come any time after the start time up until the park closes for the day.
  2. Counter service restaurants and snack windows that serve fountain drinks will give you ice water for free. Just ask!
  3. Animal Kingdom does not have lids on their drinks and they have paper straws. If you have young kids, make sure you bring them a sippy cup/water bottle to this park.
  4. You do not have to carry your packages around with you all day. You can either have them sent up to the front of the park to pick up on your way out or if you are staying on Disney property you can have them sent to your resort’s gift shop (next day).
  5. You do NOT have to tour Disney World together. It is okay to split up and do your own thing. Just schedule meals together and leave it at that. When you have a large party, everyone is not going to want to do the same thing at the same time. Disney is all about having fun! It is okay to have your fun without your 10 person family having it with you.
  6. Cast members are there to help you. Ask them everything! They know secrets you wouldn’t believe. And there is a great chance they can direct you to the perfect parade viewing spot. If we hadn’t asked a cast member on our first trip if we had picked a good spot for the fireworks, we would of missed the whole thing because of trees! (For the record we like to sit at the tables in front of Casey’s to see Wishes.)
  7. Aren’t sure where to find characters? Just read the free Times Guide that you can pick up each morning at entrance to the park (you can also find it next to just about every register too). It lists the times and locations of almost every character that is meeting that day as well as parades, fireworks, shows, etc.
  8. If you are looking for a specific character, just ask a character handler (the cast members that work with characters). They have a radio that they can use to call around and find out where and when that character is suppose to meet.
  9. Photopass photographers will also use your camera to take pictures. This is a great way to get the family photographer actually in your pictures! You do not have to purchase anything from Photopass to use this service!
  10. You can make your own autograph books at home and save money! Characters will sign anything really… shirts, hats, pillow cases, canvas, etc. They just won’t sign anything that you are currently wearing.

What would your top tips be if you only had someone’s attention for 10 minutes?

Be sure to catch up on the previous Disney World training posts here.

Let’s Save Some Money: Get free/discount services from a local college

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 05:13 PM PST

Saving money….. now there’s a topic we all love. Most of you are here reading my blog because you want to save more money. We save at the grocery store and we save at the drug store. But there are lots of ways we could be saving and stretching our dollar……

Call your local community college/trade school/dental school and see if they offer discount/free services. I have heard of them offering free or discounted hair cuts, teeth cleanings,  manicures, oil changes, car maintenance, ultrasounds (must have your doctor’s permission), etc. If you know of any more leave a comment!
