Will Low Prices Cause Gas Wells to Be Shut-In?

Will natural gas companies shut-in some of their wells in response to low gas prices? A Reuters article reports that Exxon does not plan to shut in the former XTO Energy wells but ConocoPhillips has shut-in some wells.

There are a number of reasons why some companies do not shut-in wells. These include: the possibility of even lower prices in the future, difficulty restarting the well and obtaining original production levels, long-term supply agreements and more. When Kasatochi Volcano erupted in 2008 ash fertilized the ocean and triggered a heavy phytoplankton bloom in the Gulf of Alaska. This produced an abundance of food for young salmon in the Gulf and may have given a strong boost to their population.

The Energy Information Administration has a really nice map of the Eagle Ford Shale Play. The map has thickness contours, subsea structural contours, outcrops, oil and gas well sites, and windows for oil, wet gas/condensate and dry gas. A really nice map of the Eagle Ford in Texas.

Controlled Landslide on the Pacific Coast Highway
