The Coast Guard Needs More Arctic Resources

Warming climates have opened much of the Arctic Ocean to summer shipping and other activities. To better monitor US waters and be in a better position to respond to emergencies and threats United States Coast Guard Rear Admiral Christopher C. Colvin is requesting more resources for the Arctic.

Indonesia Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano

A New York Times article gives updates on the earthquake and tsunami that struck the western coastline of Sumatra and nearby islands on Monday killing at least 100 people. It also updates on the volcanic eruption at Mount Merapi that injured about a dozen people and forced the evacuation of thousands.

Earthquake Triggers Significant Tsunami Near Indonesia

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Sumatra in Indonesia on Monday, October 26th. A tsunami killed at least 100 people with 150 missing.

A video on the CNN site reports that a tsunami may have overrun at least one small village on a remote part of the island but little reliable information is available at this time.

Mount Merapi Erupts in Indonesia

Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, has erupted, forcing over a thousand residents to flee.
