A long overdue thank you to my amazing readers….

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 06:48 AM PDT

I took this picture almost a month ago and with all the events going on in my life, I totally forgot to post it. My apologies.

I wanted to send out a HUGE heartfelt thank you to all the AMAZING, sweet, generous readers who took the time to send my daughter cards when she needed them most. We got so many beautiful cards, excellently colored pictures (which hang on her closet door), small trinkets, stickers and more. It means so much to us that you took the time to send them. I wish I had taken a moment to write each of you a Thank You card, but little miss tore into the envelopes so fast that it wasn’t possible.

She has a special bag for her cards and she sits in the floor almost daily and looks through them. She loves cards and loves getting mail. You all brought her so much joy and I am so thankful for that. May the blessings come back to you ten fold.

Kristin

Day 29 of No Dining Out October

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 06:14 AM PDT

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend at a restaurant(s) of their choice!

The rules:

1. You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habits, you can participate!
2. You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the gift card.
3. The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not.
4. You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
5. Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
6. Here is a thought… consider keeping a tally of what you would of spent this month. For example, if you really want to go out for breakfast this morning and you resist… write that down! You could then donate that money to a food bank or deposit it into your fund!
7. Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here.

My progress:

We went out to eat again…. shame on us. ;) We went to Ruby Tuesdays. Had a 25% off coupon. I think we spent about $20? I didn’t look and hubby paid.

How are you doing?

Disney Rewards Visa: The perks, the benefits, the rewards.

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 06:00 PM PDT

I am not a huge fan of credit cards but, if you are a Disney lover this is the one for you.  There are many perks to having the Disney Visa besides the way it looks and people always telling me how cute my credit card is.  My current design is actually a Toy Story 3 one and my kids think it is so cool that mom pays for items with Toy Story.

Here are a few of the rewards:

You earn 1 point for every $100 spent.  I currently put everything on this card and pay it off monthly so I love watching it grow.  You can use the points for your vacation, restaurants, Disney.com and souvenirs.  If you don’t use all of your points you can save them for next time.  Just call and talk to them and they will tell you how.  I always pay for all of my food and gifts this way.  I love it.

If you are going on a Disney Vacation and decide to stay at a resort (which I love doing)  You will get 0% for 6 months.  I always utilize so I can pay it over 6 months.  A lot of the time I will pay for my moms to help her out as well.

Receive 10% off online or at the Disney store and select locations at the park if you spend over $50.  Very handy for souvenir buying.  I like to purchase everything at once so I can save 10% off.

If you are Disney Cruise fan you will receive $50 on board credit buy using your Disney Visa.  (Best cruise I ever went on)

If you go to Disneyworld or Disneyland you can have a private meet n greet with the famous characters.  It is located at Epcot for Disney World and next to Monsters Inc for Disneyland.  You will receive a Free 5×7 to take home of your experience.  One of my favorite things to do.

10% off select Dining locations at Disneyland.  You can go here to see the list.

There is even more.  If you are planning on a Disney vacation this is one of the many ways to help save while you are there.   One of my favorite savings tips is ship your bottled water and snacks from home to the resort.  They will give you an address where to send it then you don’t have to pay $3.50 a bottle.  You get it cheap from home.  Or have Staples or Office Depot deliver it.

This is a guest post written by Jodi from My SLC Mommy. Thanks Jodi for helping me out!

Resort Hopping 101 – Animal Kingdom Safari Hop

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 04:47 PM PDT

One of our focuses on the website the past few months has been Quick Tips. We like to prepare you for the parks and offer up tips and tricks to making your vacation more enjoyable.

If case you missed our last Resort Hopping 101 ‘s check them out Monorail Express, and the Epcot Area Ferry Hop. Today I want to talk to you about something outside the DisneyWorld Theme Parks and that is the Disney World Resorts, specifically the Animal Kingdom Area Resorts.

For those people who drove to Walt Disney World or have a rental car this is an easy Resort Hop. If you are like most people who fly there this Resort Hop is going to require you to ride the buses.

Transportation issues aside this resort hop has the most variety and is great for pictures. So lets get started..

Resorts

  • Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • Cornado Springs Resort
  • All Star Movies
  • All Star Music
  • All Star Sports

I was trying to think of a theme for today’s Resort Hop so since we are in the Animal Kingdom area we are calling this a Safari Hop. So grab your safari hat and boots as we swing right in.

The best way to use today’s Resort Hop is to use Animal Kingdom as your base of operation. The buses to Animal Kingdom generally are light and all the buses are compacted in a nice area. With today’s resort hop we like to spread it out over a couple of days so what we normally do is go to the Animal Kingdom for the day. We find the 9am-5pm park hours works very well for this.

Day 1

Usually we like to leave after the Mickey Jammin Jungle Parade. That gives us a little time before we eat dinner to cruise around the resort and work up an even bigger appetite (as if walking around AK wasn’t enough)

About 99% of the time we have our ADR for Boma as its easily one of my favorite places to eat at WDW. So we head off to the Cornado Springs first. The CSR is beautiful, just walking around the lake is so serene. Be prepared to do some walking if you want to check out the whole resort. If you don’t feel like walking just stay around the main area, but if you don’t mind the walk be sure to walk over to the Dig Site. Check out a map of the resort here.

So after some window shopping its time to jump back in the car or bus and make your way to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. If your going by bus you will have to go to DAK first then to AKL. This is where leaving the park early comes into play. If you taking the bus be sure to watch your time if its to late your going to have to bus hop from Epcot to the AKL.

When you arrive at the Animal Kingdom Lodge be prepared to be amazed. I remember walking into the resort for the first time and was just in awe of how beautiful the inside of the resort is. Take your time and walk around. Sit in the comfy lobby chairs.

If I could move into a resort and live there is would be it. It is breath taking just to walk the grounds. You can easily spend hours walking around this resort. We were fortunate on our last trip to do that as our little one passed out in the stroller..To bad she missed out on the animals in the savanna.

If your not eating anywhere at this resort be sure to still check out the restaurants. Usually if you ask the hostess you want to take some pictures or look at the food they don’t mind.

The best article I have read with the most info on the Animal Kingdom Lodge comes from Allears. Check out the link here to learn more about the resort.

The attention to detail is phenomenal so TAKE YOUR TIME! Explore and just take in all the sights, sounds, and smells.

Day 2

The best thing about the All Star Resorts is they are all together. The worst thing is they all share the same buses. So depending on your situation and what resort you want to check out will determine how long of a bus ride you have so have patience. Most times we just go in order Sports, Music, and then Movies.

Walking around the resorts have fun taking pictures, exploring, and playing with all the fun things on site. You can get real creative with the pictures if you have a good imagination.

The three resorts are no where near the size of a moderate resort so you can easily do all three in a few hours depending on transportation.

Normally we use this day to kill time till our dinner ADR, or its something fun to do after dinner if you didn’t want to go back to another park.

So that concludes this weeks Resort Hopping 101. I hope you enjoy Safari Hopping as much as my family and I do. Stay tuned next time as I discuss the Lights Camera Action Hop.

If you have anything little tips or suggestions on things to do and see at these resorts be sure to let us know in the comment section below.

When Chip isn’t having a great time at Walt Disney World he is busy blogging about it over at Chip and Company – Your Source for Disney News and Views.

Busy shopping day…

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 04:17 PM PDT

I live in the Birmingham, AL area and the new outlet mall “The Shops at Grand River” opened today so of course me and hubby had to go. And when you are shopping, boy does time go by fast! Before I knew it, it was 1 pm. And we got there at 9 am!

First we hit The Children’s Place. The first 200 customers that spent $20 or more got a $15 gift card. Well they didn’t say you couldn’t be related, so hubby and I split up and each checked out. We spent $66 total but we got back $30 in gift cards. Woo hoo! They had some AWESOME deals too. I got Jacob a dress coat for $4.99 and a bunch of polos for $2.99 a piece. Gotta be careful in the outlet malls though because they put the expensive stuff in there too.

Then we went to the VF Factory Outlet and they had men’s Levi’s for $8.97 and $6.97 a pair! Got hubby 4 great looking pairs of jeans, found me 2 nice pairs of pants, a nice shirt,  got the kids each a pair of jeans and got hubby 3 long sleeve t-shirts for $62!

Then it was time to find me an outfit for the memorial service. I hardly ever buy myself clothes. You know how it is when you are overweight. You don’t want to spend money on the bigger size you currently wear because one day you are going to be thin. And then you will buy clothes. Only that one day never comes. HAHA! So I had nothing decent to wear. I went in quite a few stores and finally found clothes I liked at Dress Barn. I found a beautiful black shirt (that instantly thins you! haha) and a really pretty purple top and a gorgeous red sweater. Hubby and I split up again… and he used a 20% off coupon on one top and I used a $10/$50 on the other 2 items. Our total together was $73. Ouch. Not really outlet prices, but hey I deserved it. And now I have 2 nice outfits to wear places. The self esteem alone was worth $73. ;)

Then of course I don’t own any dress shoes….. and the outlet shoe stores were not outlet prices. So we ran over to the local Payless shoe store and I got 2 very comfortable dress shoes (black and brown) for $33. One pair at the store at the outlet mall was $40-$60. I showed them. ;) I really love Payless. Did you know if you buy 4 pairs of shoes at once, it will give you the 2nd and the 4th cheapest pair free? And not the 3rd and 4th cheapest pair? I thought that was really neat and kind of them.

Overall it was a really great day. I really enjoyed shopping with hubby and I am really excited about the outfits I got. But boy am I tired. You do a lot of walking at a mall.
