Além de corrigir algumas deficiências do seu antecessor, Nascar 09 também traz algumas boas adições que podem fazer com que a série caia novamente nas boas graças dos jogadores. A começar pela presença de vários pilotos famosos da Nascar, algo que havia sido deixado meio de lado em Nascar 08. Agora, além de se deparar com pilotos como Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin, Juan Pablo Montoya e Carl Edwards (que finalmente marca presença na série), o jogador será auxiliado de perto pelo tetra campeão Jeff Gordon. Entre outras coisas, Gordon irá observar algumas deficiências do jogador e sugerir treinos específicos. Outra boa característica de Nascar 09 é o fato de a reputação do jogador ter um papel crucial no seu desenvolvimento. Seja qual for o modo escolhido para começar, o jogador, de início, contará com absolutamente nenhuma reputação (é claro). Entretanto, ao contrário do que se poderia pensar, para conseguir um bom reconhecimento por parte de patrocinadores e demais pilotos, não basta que se ganhe corridas. A ética do jogador acaba também contanto muito. É claro que outros corredores facilitarão a vida de uma personalidade famosa (oferecendo passagem, por exemplo), mas isso é uma via de mão dupla. Nascar 09 também conta com uma IA totalmente reformulada. O desafio agora parece ser bem mais realista, estando os famosos algozes (como, por exemplo, carros que atravessavam a pista inteira com o único intuito de tirar o jogador da pista) agora bem mais controlados. Além disso, outro fato que torna o jogo bem mais palatável é o acréscimo das chamadas "friendly bumps"; agora não será qualquer "esbarrão" que fará o carro deslizar para fora da pista. Nascar 09 ainda conta com um modo multiplayer para até 12 jogadores e uma possibilidade para personalização de carros bem mais expressiva.
