MeeGo v1.1 For Handsets Released

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 10:15 AM PDT

A few days, Nokia had released the PR1.3 firmware update for the N900 which allows the device to dual-boot between Maemo and MeeGo OS. Following this, the MeeGo OS v1.1 for handsets has been released today as well with U-Boot support. No official change-log has been provided so we can't really say what the major changes in this version are. However, we expect everything to be more polished and simply work better.

Since Nokia does not officially support N900 owners dual-booting their phones, I would suggest them to stay away as it will void their warranty. However, hackers and modders who like to tinker around with their phone are already in action and have uploaded a video of the N900 dual-booting the Maemo and MeeGo OS. Here is the video –:

Users can download the MeeGo OS v1.1 image for the Nokia N900 from here. Let the modding begin folks!

Rumor: Google Set to Launch Nexus Two Manufactured by Samsung on November 8

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 09:08 AM PDT

Google-Nexus-TwoGoogle Nexus One might have been a commercial flop; however, it succeeded in securing a special place in the hearts of Android lovers, due to its combination of excellent hardware with open and no-nonsense software. The Nexus One became “the” phone to own for Android enthusiasts thanks to its quick updates, vanilla Android OS and unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately, Google’s direct online purchase model bombed, leading Eric Schmidt (CEO, Google) to remark that Google will not be selling phones in the future. However, according to latest rumors floating around, this might not entirely be true.

According to Android and Me, the Nexus Two exists and is coming soon. Samsung will reportedly unveil the Nexus Two in a press event being held on November 8. Radio Android also picked up the same information through an anonymous tipster. The available information suggests that the new device will be called the Nexus S, and as far as hardware is concerned, will be identical to the Samsung Galaxy S series of phones. This means that it will sport a 4-inch SAMOLED screen and will be powered by a Hummingbird processor.

The real differentiating factor will be the software. The Nexus S is expected feature the vanilla flavor of Gingerbread (Android 3.0/2.3). Additionally, like the Nexus One, it will also have an unlocked bootloader that will facilitate the installation of custom ROMs.

As you might expect, neither Samsung nor Google is willing to confirm or deny the speculations. Samsung has only confirmed that it will be announcing a new Android phone on November 8. According to the DroidGuy’s sources, the handset being launched by Samsung will not be the successor to Nexus One. Nevertheless, we are keeping our fingers crossed. Either way, if you are thinking about purchasing a new Android phone, we highly recommend that you wait for a few more days before making a decision.

Opera-Mini-5

Opera Mini, the most popular mobile browser in the world, offers full-fledged tabbed browsing, password management, bookmarks, speed dial, synchronization and more on almost any phone. Opera Mini routes all data through its servers where it is processed and compressed before being sent to the handset. This makes Opera Mini significantly faster than most other mobile browsers on slower networks. However, this also means that, unlike Opera Mobile, Opera Mini isn’t able to render rich web content that heavily utilizes AJAX and other modern technologies. Opera Mobile is designed for modern-day smartphones and delivers a truly PC like web browsing experience. It is already available for Symbian and should be released for Android within the next couple of days.

You can download the latest build of Opera Mini from the respective app repositories (Ovi Store for Symbian and Market for Android) or by simply browsing to m.opera.com on your mobile phone.

Synapse: One Phone to Bring Them All and In the Darkness Bind Them

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 06:11 AM PDT

Cellphones are the hottest things around and the cellphone market is growing like the population in India. There are big players like Apple, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, HTC and Nokia that have taken over the world with their build quality, the buzz, the support and pushing out constant updates with amazing new features. While Apple is being a show-stealer here with its iPhone, other handset manufacturers are surviving on some regional love and partly on the ignorance of users.

So, what do you need to be to get spotted on this overtly crowded train? You need to be different. Not odd, but different- like Synapse is. Until now, you might have heard of custom ROMs, things like you can install Android on an iPhone and you can run the firmware from one phone on another. This is different. This phone is customizable not for its software but for the hardware!

As for the specs, the phone runs on Android 2.2, has a 1 GHz processor (no further details), has a 4 inch super LCD display, three different microphones for call, camera and noise detection #FTW (as on the Droid X, Motorola Finiti), an Aluminum body and support of up to 32 GB. It ships with a worldwide warranty of 3 years and will be available from next year.

Coming back to the part why it is different, the phone has customizable hardware. You can choose between 3G and 4G, 5 8 and 12 megapixel for the camera, an HDMI output, a TV out and build in memory from 4, 8, 16 and 32 GB. You feel the 1200 mA battery is too less for your heavy usage, change it to 1500 mA or if you want a front camera for that video calling feature, you get to choose that too. In simple words, you cook your phone and make it into your own dream machine. Finally, the phone is pre-rooted. So, you can start playing with it right away.

Follow their blog for more updates on this phone.
