Levees in Illinois Can’t Be Trusted – Flood Maps Revised

The Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to reclassify land in Illinois protected by 75 miles levees. FEMA has determined that the levees can’t be trusted and says that the land behind them is now a flood hazard area. Now residents and businesses in areas like Granite City must rethink their flood insurance and many with mortgages will be required to buy the insurance.

Norilsk Nickel, a Russian mining company, plans to sell its 51% stake in Stillwater Mining Company, a mining, processing, refining and marketing company with a focus on palladium, platinum and related metals. Stillwater is the only domestic producer of palladium and platinum.

Natural Gas Reserves Shoot Up for Shale States

The Energy Information Administration has published a map that shows the increase in wet natural gas proved reserves by state for 2008-2009. There were huge increases for the states with large shale gas plays such as Pennsylvania, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.

Placing them requires information about sea floor features and they are also vulnerable to sea floor disasters such as landslides. A flawless 14.23 carat pink diamond nicknamed “Perfect Pink” was sold in a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong for $23.2 million – a new record for a gemstone sold at auction in Asia.
