Shale Oil vs Oil Shale – What is the Difference?

Two very similar terms are being used for substances of very different origins.

Oil Shale: A rock that contains significant amounts of kerogen (a solid organic compound) that can yield liquid oil if it is heated in the absense of oxygen. Significant deposits of oil shale exist in the Green River Formation of Colorado.

Shale Oil: Crude oil that is produced from tight shale formations such as the the Niobrara Shale of Colorado, the Bakken Shale of North Dakota and the Eagle Ford Shale of Texas.

Rain and heavy snow have caused flooding in parts of Albania, Serbia and Bosnia. People there are coping with cold weather, no electricity, no water and other problems.

Eruption at Tungurahua Volcano

Tungurahua Volcano, a stratovolcano in central Ecuador, continues to erupt – blasting a column of ash about one mile high. Tungurahua has a history of sudden strong volcanic explosions, lava flows, lahars and pyroclastic flows.

Landslides and Flooding in Colombia and Venezuela

Heavy rains last week caused flooding and landslides along the Caribbean coast of Venezuela and Colombia. Over 160 people have been killed.
