Hydraulic Fracturing

Hydraulic fracturing is a procedure that can increase the flow of oil or gas from a well. It is done by pumping liquids down a well into subsurface rock units under pressures that are high enough to fracture the rock. The goal is to create a network of interconnected fractures that will serve as pore spaces for the movement of oil and natural gas to the well bore.

The Glowing Bobtail Squid

The Bobtail Squid is nocturnal animal that has a unique ability to hide in the dark. It has a mutually beneficial relationship with luminescent Vibrio fischeri bacteria that emit light that is similar to moonlight entering the water. This produces a glow around the squid that eliminates a “shadow” which would reveal the squid’s location to predators.

Do you think that you have good wayfinding skills? Have you ever gotten lost in a big building? Here is an article that gets into the psychology of “wayfinding” and how psychologists could work with architects to create buildings that are easier for people to navigate.

The concepts of this article might (for some people) apply directly to wayfinding in the field or on the road. Instead of trying to remember a sequence of “turns” it might be more helpful to remember a sequence of “landmarks”.

A Visit to White Island, New Zealand

White Island is a stratovolcano located about 30 miles off of North Island, New Zealand. A Pittsburgh Post Gazette writer reports on her visit to the island with a tourist group.

The island is uninhabited. A sulfur mine was established on the island but the mine was abandoned in 1914 when a lahar killed all of the workers.
