Monitoring Eyjafjallajökull Volcano

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull Volcano was stirring underground for several months before it erupted last spring. Researchers are reviewing earthquake and deformation data in an effort to understand the volcano and be better able to predict future eruptions.

Devon Energy’s Jackfish Oil Sands Project in northern Alberta, Canada now has its first steam in the ground and yields about 35,000 barrels of oil per day. This video gives you a visit to the plant, an overview of the project and an explanation of their steam assisted gravity drainage process.

We noticed this on the Arizona Geology Blog where Lee Allison is a huge advocate for state geological surveys.

Carbon Monoxide in Ice Cores Tracks Biomass Burning

Ash Plumes and Strombolian Activity at Klyuchevskaya Volcano

Klyuchevskaya Volcano, the tallest volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula resumed erupting in late November 2010 with ash plumes rising up to 26,000 feet above sea level. The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team reported strombolian activity on December 1 and 2.

Snowfall and Cold Temperatures in Ireland

Colombia Flooding and Landslides

Heavy rains over several days caused flooding and saturated soils in Colombia. Then, on Sunday a large landslide near the city of Madellin resulted in 30 houses being covered with mud and about 100 people missing.
