Tundra Fires Increase as Arctic Climate Changes

“The Anaktuvuk River Fire in 2007 burned over 1,000 square kilometers of tundra on Alaska’s North Slope, doubling the area burned in that region since record keeping began in 1950. A new analysis reveals that this was the most destructive tundra fire at that site for at least 5,000 years.” Quoted from the NSF press release.

Bolivian Drought Threat

“Catastrophic drought is on the near-term horizon for the capital city of Bolivia, according to new research into the historical ecology of the Andes. If temperatures rise more than 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius (3 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit) above those of modern times, parts of Peru and Bolivia will become a desert-like setting.” Quoted from the NSF press release.
