Real Super Meat Boy is Gross

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 05:13 PM PDT

Artist Dave Rapoza thought it would be fun to imagine what Super Meat Boy looks like if he weren’t rendered in pixels, and then he took that imagining and made a picture. Here is that picture:

That is just horrifying.

Raiden is in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 04:54 PM PDT

Man, some high-ups at Ubisoft and Konami must be banging, because this Metal Gear Solid/Assassin’s Creed thing* is just weird. Anyway, according to a Joystiq tipster, Raiden is an unlockable in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and he/she said you unlock him by “virtual training” in the Animus. That seems remarkably easy for an unlockable like this, but we’ll see about that soon enough.

Raiden, though? I mean, I understand that it’s cross-promotion for MGS: Rising, which is on the horizon, but come on. Raiden is such an annoying douche, even though he is kinda crazy awesome as a fighter. It is only an “outfit,” though, so hopefully he won’t open his mouth.

*For those not familiar with the situation: back in the day, Altair was unlockable in Metal Gear Solid 4.

New Silent Hill Coming to Theaters in 3-f**king-D

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 03:24 PM PDT

Surprise, surprise, Fangoria says Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is in production at Lionsgate. Oh my. The thing is written and will be directed by Michael J. Bassett, a veteran of sorts of genre filmmaking with three pictures you’ve never seen under his belt (Solomon Kane, Deathwatch and Wilderness). It was gonna be written by Oscar Winner Roger Avary, as the first Silent Hill film was, but then Roger got drunk and killed a guy with his car.

More interesting is that the film is an adaptation of Silent hill 3, in which the protagonist is Heather Mason. Here’s the movie’s synopsis:

For years, Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn't fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

And it’ll be shot in 3D! Normally I like to mock this abominable gimmick, but I actually like it on horror movies. I mean, Saw 3D was pretty much the best, right? That part where the woman’s head gets smushed and the pieces fly out of the screen right at you was just about the finest moment cinema has had this year. And Silent Hill was pretty much the closest we’ve come to having a legitimately good video game adaptation thus far, so this could be it (unless the Uncharted movie comes out first). Bring it on, Lionsgate.

Microsoft Explains Why They Moved Indie Games in New Dashboard Update

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 02:29 PM PDT

With the new Dashboard update, the Xbox Live Indie Games section was moved from the Games section of the marketplace to Specialty Shops alongside the Avatar Marketplace. Some of the Indie Games developers weren’t so pumped about this, saying the move pushes these games “further into obscurity.”

But Microsoft says it ain’t like that a’ tall*. They say this will help the Indie Games, or at least they hope it will. You would think, at least, that Microsoft isn’t trying to, like, bury a potential stream of revenue. Here’s the explanation from Microsoft, speaking to Eurogamer:

The intent of the Specialty Shops section was to provide access to marketplaces that focus on a specific type of content, with unique ways of sorting through that content. We wanted to give Xbox Live Indie Games that full marketplace experience and felt this was the best place to do it, alongside other popular channels like the Avatar Marketplace.

In fact, since the launch of Avatars, Xbox Live members have made more than 290 million customizations to their Avatar’s clothing, so we expect many people to regularly visit the Specialty Shops section.

Maybe it’s a bad move that will prove unsuccessful, but they aren’t trying to f**k you, poor developers. Bitch away if you think it’s not working, of course, but let’s stay calm here. Maybe have a drink, or smoke a little weed. I also hear meth will help you work more efficiently, so maybe you could try that, too. Hey, just trying to help here.

*It’s a colloquialism, dick.

We thought you’d like that, which is why today, we’re going to show you how to install Fallout 3 mods, and then which ones you need to grab for yourself.

Pip Boy Activated? Great! Let’s get started.

System Requirements

It’s been a few years, so it’s almost certain your PC can handle Fallout 3 Mods. Even so, it’s always good to be sure.

* OS: Minimum – Windows XP; Recommended – Windows Vista
* CPU: Minimum – Pentium 4 2.4 GHz / Athlon XP 2500+; Recommended – Intel Core 2 Duo / Athlon 64 X2 5200+
* Memory: Minimum – 1 GB (XP) / 2 GB (Vista); Recommended – 2 GB (XP) / 2.5 GB (Vista)
* Minimum – Graphics hardware DirectX 9.0c compliant card with 256 MB RAM (NVIDIA 6800 or better / ATI X800 or better); Recommended – DirectX 9.0c compliant card with 512 MB RAM (NVIDIA 8800 series, ATI HD 3800 series)

Tools

The first thing you’re going to need to install Fallout 3 mods is a compression utility such as Winrar, or 7-zip. Click either link to locate and download.

Next, you’ll also need to grab the following tools:

1) Fallout Mod Manager
2) FO3Edit
3) Fallout Script Extender

Let’s tackle them one at a time, ok?

Fallout Mod Manager

The Fallout Mod Manager (henceforth: FOMM) helpfully lists your mods in the order you installed them – as you can see above, Fallout 3 will be listed first. All mods and DLC listed below. This is particularly useful in troubleshooting – Some fallout 3 mods might break your game, particularly when it tries to load all of them simultaneously. Using FOMM you can disable and enable Fallout 3 mods one by one to find out who the culprit is.

In addition, FOMM also comes with a vast array of tools to make managing your mods a snap:

* Transactional Installation – If a mod fails to activate properly, any changes it made to your game are undone. (Prevents partially-installed mods.)

* File versioning – If a mod overwrites a file that has been installed by another mod, FOMM backs up the original file. Should you deactivate the second mod, FOMM will restore the original version of the overwritten file.

* Graphics Setting – This enables you to change these settings directly from the “Game settings” file, without having to launch the game.

* New Mod Version Checks – FOMM will search the Internets for new versions of the mods you’ve installed.

Head over to the Fallout 3 Nexus and grab a copy now, and to install:

* Open FOMM using your compression utility
* Once it’s decompressed, it will be assigned to a temporary folder. Open that folder.
* In a separate window, open C:Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Fallout3.
* Back in the temp file containing FOMM, highlight everything in the file and drag/drop into the Fallout 3 file.
* Confirm you want to install.

FO3Edit

FO3Edit will resolve many of the problems that result from having multiple Fallout 3 Mods installed. What it does is look through all your mods, identifies values that are being edited by multiple mods, and creates a merged path so that, instead of having each mod attempting to edit individual copies of the same value, they’ll be essentially accessing the same copy of that single value. Think of it like forcing your mods to carpool to work in a hybrid, instead of letting them drive in their individual SUVs.

You can grab a copy here (use the readme to install).

Fallout Script Extender

You’ll need the Fallout Script Extender (FOSE, henceforth) because a lot of Fallout 3 mods require additional scripting commands to properly work. Installing FOSE will allow you expand the scripting capability of Fallout 3 without altering its .exe or the Fallout 3 version of G.E.C.K.

You can get it here. Once downloaded, install:

* Open FOSE using your compression utility
* Once it’s decompressed, it will be assigned to a temporary folder. Open that folder.
* In a separate window, open C:Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Fallout3.
* Back in the temp file containing FOSE, highlight everything in the file and drag/drop into the Fallout 3 file.
* Confirm you want to install.
* Done.

Should it become neccessary to use FOSE to install a Fallout 3 mod, you’ll be able to access it from inside FOMM. There’s a shiny “Launch FOSE” button for your convenience.

WARNING: FOSE is incompatible with Games For Windows Live. You might also review this page for additional restrictions.

Installing Fallout 3 Mods

Tools located and activated? Good. Finally, it’s time to actually learn how to install Fallout 3 Mods.

Step One: Assuming you’ve downloaded the mod you want to install, locate where the downloaded file was placed, and right click to open with whichever file extraction app you downloaded.

Step Two: Create a temp file to place the mod data into.

Step Three: now, open up that file and identify the game data and graphics information to make the mod function (.esp files, sounds, meshes, and texture files). Like so:

Step Four: Find your actual Fallout 3 files, most likely found at C:Program Files/Bethesda/Softworks/Fallout3. Click into the “Data” file.

NOTE: Duh.

Step Five: Now, go back to the temp file you created, and highlight those usable files from the Mod’s folder. Drag and drop them into the data folder.

Step Six: You will be asked if you want to merge the folders. Say yes.

Congratulations, you’ve installed your first Fallout 3 mod. Now, we’ll just need to activate it. This is where FOMM comes in.

There are a lot of different methods for getting Fallout 3 Mods fully working, but the routine we found most helpful was suggested over at Angry About Life:

A) Bring up FOMM

B) Click Help.

C) Check For Updates

D) Now, check boxes next to every mod you want to play. If you’ve played through the official game (including DLC), but haven’t yet added any mods, you’ll only see the actual game, + DLC, like so:.

E) Just to get into the habit, click Auto Sort; this will put files in the order you uploaded them.

F) Now, exit FOMM and bring up FO3Edit.

G) Once FO3Edit is finished, right click Load Order.

H) Select to create a Merged Patch.

I) Exit FO3Edit and bring up FOMM once more.

J) Everything should still be organized in the order you installed, and at the bottom of the list, you should now see the new mod. Check box to enable.

K) Close FOMM and bring up FO3MasterUpdate.

ONE LAST THING: Go ahead and bring up Fallout 3. You can either click “Launch FOSE” from inside FOMM, or load normally. Once there, you can do a final check to make sure the mod is ready to go by clicking the Data Files link on the Fallout 3 title menu:

If everything worked and you’re satisfied, so go ahead and click play.

Now you know how to install them – so which Fallout 3 mods are you going to want? No list can be truly comprehensive, but we’ve compiled a few of the best below.

Dynamic Weather

Dynamic Weather offers a more naturalistic, progressively changing weather environment for you to play around in. Gone is the basic pea soup grey that overshadows everything. Now you get dust storms, lightning, rain variants, crisper days and blacker nights. But really, look at that fog! What else do you need to know? Get it here.

Fallout Who

We reported on this one a few weeks back. This ongoing mod-in-development takes characters and conventions from the Dr. Who universe (including Torchwood!), and places them (courtesy of the miracle of Time Travel) into Fallout 3. You can get it here.

Warhammer 40K Conversion

Another Fallout 3 mod we reported on, Warhammer 40K Conversion does what it sounds like: Warhammer 40K + Fallout 3. SQEEEEEEEE. Get it here.

RTS – Real Time Settler

We’ll leave you with the greatest Fallout 3 Mod of all time. Real Time Settler is a RT strategy game crammed into Fallout 3, which allows you to found, build, and manage a wholly original village of your own within the Capital Wasteland. Start with a post office. Watch as wandering wretches show up to join your village and micro-manage it from tiny settlement to, well it’s worth playing to find out. It’s strictly for the hardcore: You have to be willing to put some mothafracking time into it, and then some, and then some more. This is probably the most ambitious Fallout 3 mod you’ll ever see, and you can get it here.

Additional Resources:

Angry about life provided a lost of assistance as we put this one together.

As is generally the case, the Fallout 3 Nexus is a vast repository. Visit is often.

EA Financials Say FIFA is Still King

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 01:36 PM PDT

What’s the top-selling game of the year so far? Red Dead Redemption? Halo: Reach? Starcraft II? To be honest, we don’t know, because we don’t have exact to-date sales figures for any of those games. But I would guess that odds are good that FIFA 11 is, so far, the biggest game of the year, because EA says in their Q2 2011 financial report that the game has sold 8 million copies. As of when I don’t know, because EA does not say, but since the report also mentions Medal of Honor sales, and that game came out after the quarter ended, it probably includes October sales for FIFA as well. They also say that FIFA was the top game, period, in Europe for the quarter, which is pretty cool.

What does this mean? It means that sports are cool, nerds. Get used to it.

Rock Band 3 Squier Guitar Available March 1

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 12:13 PM PDT

Not content to peck away at a 102 button controller to play Rock Band 3 Pro mode? Well Fender announced the release date and pricing for the Squier Electric Guitar peripheral for Rock Band 3 finally. The authentically strung electric guitar/controller will retail for $280 and become available for sale on March 1, 2011. Fender announced that will begin taking pre-orders for the device on January 1, 2011 through its website.

Using the Squier as a guitar controller requires users also have the MadCatz MIDI adapter which reportedly will retail for $40 but works for MIDI compatible guitar, keyboards and Drum kits. The Squier is a fully working electric guitar and can be connected to standard amplifiers and pedals for performances, though the game itself does not support such outrageous behaviors.

This Call Of Duty: Black Ops Double Rainbow Is So Intense

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 11:15 AM PDT

Looks like someone at Treyarch has been having a bit of fun. Via Reddit, here’s a screenshot from next week’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. Yes, that is a Double Rainbow, all the way across the sky.

What does this mean? Probably that Black Ops is full of Easter Eggs. Here’s hoping there’s a Brooklyn Tornado somewhere in there. In the meantime, oh my god, it’s so beautiful.

If you just can’t get enough, we strongly advise you to check out James “Rusty Venture” Urbaniak’s brilliant Rainbow Connection/Double Rainbow mashup. And be sure to stay tuned to our coverage of Black Ops via the links below.

Gran Turismo 5 Discs Being Stamped Now

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 09:33 AM PDT

Gran Turismo 5 was supposed to release yesterday. Heck, it was supposed to be released several times in the past. Its most recent delay was three weeks ago.

Yesterday, Eurogamer reported that sources had “expressed concern” that GT5 wouldn’t be out until next year.

Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi may have put this worry to rest. According to Jalopnik, they asked Yamauchi when GT5 would be released, and he responded, “The discs are being stamped as we speak.”

So, Gran Turismo 5 appears to have gone gold. Looks like it may make that Christmas release after all.

New Battlefield Game to be Announced Friday

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 08:01 AM PDT

Twitter has pretty much become the de facto source for reveals of games. The latest is the news that a new Battlefield game will be announced this Friday. Oh, and it’s not Battlefield 3.

Ben Cousins, General Manager of Easy (the company behind Battlefield Heroes), said on his Twitter yesterday,

Flying to London later today to show a new, unannounced #Battlefield game to the press. News goes public on Friday. (NOT #BF3)

It’s also not Battlefield Assault, the rumored game that was based on a domain that EA acquired earlier this year. Cousins added in a subsequent Twitter post,

Just to confirm – I am NOT going to London to announce any game called 'Battlefield Assault'. That is just a URL EA picked up.

We’ll have to wait until Friday to see what it is, but it’s definitely going to be something new.

NBA Elite 11 Officially Canceled

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 07:19 AM PDT

Everyone was a bit surprised when EA delayed NBA Elite 11 just a week before it would have launched in late September. At the time, EA said the delay was necessary to allow them to address concerns raised in play testing, and to generally “polish” the gameplay. Well, it looks like they polished it away to nothing, as NBA Elite 11 has now been officially canceled.

On EA’s investor call yesterday, John Schappert announced the cancellation, and added that the franchise would return next year. Instead of EA Canada (the studio where EA laid off 100 ‘redundant’ employees in October), the development for next year’s iteration will be handled by EA Tiburon, the developer behind the Madden and Tiger Woods series.

So, until next year, you’ll have to depend on NBA 2K11 for your pro basketball fix. If you want to hear what we thought about 2K11, you can find our review right here.
