| Kilauea Lava Flows into the Ocean Posted: 03 Nov 2010 10:46 PM PDT “The youngest land on Earth lies along the southern coast of the island of Hawaii, where lava from Kilauea Volcano enters the ocean. When lava meets the sea, it vaporizes seawater and creates a dense plume of steam. Over time, the lava builds a delta, extending the shoreline of Hawaii.” Quoted from the NASA image release.

Economic Impact of the Utica Shale in New York Posted: 03 Nov 2010 10:41 PM PDT Development of the Utica Shale in Quebec could yield over one billion dollars per year in royalties and thousands of jobs.
Meltwater Flowing Through Ice Sheets Posted: 03 Nov 2010 10:30 PM PDT “Meltwater flowing through ice sheets can carry warmth to the interior via crevasses, fractures, and large drains called moulins. A new modeling study shows that such warming can greatly accelerate the thermal response of an ice sheet to climate change.” Quoted from the University of Colorado at Boulder press release.
Marcellus Gas Production in Bradford and Susquehanna Counties Posted: 03 Nov 2010 10:29 PM PDT Half of Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale natural gas production is coming from Bradford and Susquehanna Counties in the northeastern part of the state.
Posted: 03 Nov 2010 10:18 PM PDT “Using the world’s largest, fully steerable radio telescope [...], an international team of researchers is [...] mapping the universe and gaining valuable clues about the nature of the mysterious “dark energy” believed to constitute nearly three-fourths of the universe’s mass and energy.” Quoted from the National Science Foundation website.
Ground Water Depletion and Sea Level Rise Posted: 03 Nov 2010 10:18 PM PDT Rivers of water are continuously pumped from the earth and consumed by people. As a result, ground water levels are being drawn down in many parts of the world – often by hundreds of feet. How much of that water is now in the ocean and contributing to global sea level rise?
Posted: 03 Nov 2010 06:55 PM PDT Many people associate wind energy with vast expanses of open land. However, small open areas in the forest can host a small wind farm – such as this mountain top location in western Pennsylvania. (If you change the map to “terrain” view you can see how the windmills follow the ridge.)
Alteration of River Flow by Land and Water Management Posted: 03 Nov 2010 03:42 PM PDT “The amount of water flowing in streams and rivers has been significantly altered in nearly 90 percent of waters that were assessed in a new nationwide USGS study. Flow alterations are a primary contributor to degraded river ecosystems and loss of native species.” Quoted from the USGS press release.
Mount Merapi Continues to Erupt in Indonesia Posted: 03 Nov 2010 12:54 PM PDT Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted several times on Wednesday, November 3rd, prompting the evacuation of thousands.
