U.S. Geological Survey research shows that Mount Rainier is one of our Nation's most dangerous volcanoes. It has been the source of countless eruptions and volcanic mudflows that have surged down valleys on its flanks and buried broad areas now densely populated.

Yale to Return Machu Picchu Artifacts

Yale University has agreed to return a very large collection of pre-Columbian artifacts to the government of Peru. University researchers excavated the artifacts in the early 1900′s and Peru claims that they are national heritage property.

The Northern Guam Lens Aquifer Study (pdf)

The population of Guam is expected to increase significantly over the next decade as the United States military begins relocating personnel. An important question is: “Will the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer be able to support an increased population?”. USGS is conducting a ground water study there to assess the aquifer and its recharge rate.

Japan Received Most of China’s Rare Earth Exports

Japan imports more rare earth elements than any other country. In the first nine months of 2010, Japan received 50% of China’s rare earth exports while the United States received 19%.

17.8 MMcf/day from a Barnett Shale Well

Chesapeake Energy had a Barnett Shale well in north Texas produce an average of 17.8 million cubic feet per day for the month of September. The well now holds the Barnett Shale record for monthly natural gas production from a single well.
