Stockpile Checklist: Is your family prepared for tough economic times? Posted: 20 Nov 2010 11:46 AM PST The following is a guest post written by my dear friend Becca. Hopefully this will help your family as well. Living paycheck to paycheck is a term I hear often but never thought it pertained to me. We are a family of 4 and rely solely on my husband’s income. There isn’t much that we want that we don’t have, or have plans to obtain soon. We live in a 3 bedroom home in a nice cookie cutter neighborhood. My husband recently got a new job with better pay, full benefits for all of us, and great retirement. No more overtime, stress, calls in the middle of the night; the new job is an 8-5 position with no overtime or on call schedules. We made a plan to pay our debt off and budget in our Disney trip. We felt so blessed and were on cloud nine. Then we got a bit of news that we were never expecting. My husband’s new employer withholds the first 2 week paycheck until he quits or is let go from the company. Well now we are going without income for a month, which to some, isn’t that big of a deal, but (as I now realize) we live paycheck to paycheck so it is a big deal for us. I have spent the last few days calling all of our bills explaining that I will be late, that I can’t make any of my payment and that I am sorry. This we will overcome by withdrawing some money from our retirement fund and playing catch up for a bit. Thankfully I make a monthly menu and do once a month grocery shopping based on that menu. So we are ok for food, besides the basics that everyone seems to always need more of like: milk, eggs, bread, etc. But we have family that is willing to help. So this got me thinking! What if my husband was laid off or there was a natural disaster that kept us from leaving our home. We aren’t prepared for this. So I sat down, figured out all the things I would not want to be without and made a list. I will now be focusing on stockpiling these items so if this ever happens again, we are prepared and I don’t have to worry about taking care of families essentials. With sales and coupons this shouldn’t be too large of an unexpected expense and I will just keep a list of expiration dates to make sure everything is used before it goes bad. Stockpile Checklist This is just an example of items that you might need in the event that you went a month or more without being able to go grocery shopping. Dry goods 2 10lb bags of flour 2 5lb bags of sugar 3 boxes of baking soda 1 can of baking powder 1 canister of salt 2 boxes of baking mix (like Bisquick) 3 boxes of instant mashed potatoes Canned goods 20 cans of green beans 20 cans of corn 20 cans of fruit cocktail 30 cans of soup 25 cans of tomato sauce 10 cans of tomatoes 10 cans of black beans 5 jars of spaghetti sauce 2 jars of peanut butter 2 jars of jelly 20 cans of refried beans 4 boxes of soy milk 4 boxes of almond milk Freezer goods 2 gallons of milk 5 loafs of bread 2 packs of hot dogs and buns 2 packs of hamburger patties and buns 10 lbs of chicken breasts cut in various ways 3 packs of bacon 4 lbs of hamburger 2-4 packages of lunch meat 6 boxes of butter 3 chopped onions 3 2lb bricks of cheese 4 bags of mixed veggies 2 cans of juice 3 bags of tortillas Pantry goods 20 boxes of cereal 10 lbs of rice 2 canisters of bread crumbs 2 bags of kidney beans 2 bags of navy beans 5 canisters of oatmeal 2 jugs of syrup 1 jar of vegetable oil 1 jar of olive oil 2 cans of Pam spray 3 gallons of water 8 boxes of crackers Personal care 2 sticks of each persons deodorant 2 tubes of toothpaste 2 bags of feminine pads 6 bottles of shampoo and conditioner 12 bars of soap 6 bottles of body wash Cleaning supplies 4 bottles of hand soap 2 bottles of dishwashing liquid 3 boxes of dishwasher tablets 6 bottles of laundry soap 1 extra dryer bar 2 cans of scrubbing bubbles 4 tubs of Clorox wipes 120 rolls of toilet paper 10 rolls of paper towels 1 bottle of pine sol 2 boxes of garbage bags Snacks 2 boxes of popcorn bags 6 bags of tortilla chips 2 jars of salsa 5 bags of jerky 35 fruit leathers 2 bags of cookies Pet supplies 2 20lb bags of cat food 4 jugs of cat liter Extras 5 boxes of Ziploc sandwich bags 5 boxes of Ziploc freezer bags 20 batteries of each size

Restaurants.com: Get a $25 certificate for $2! Posted: 20 Nov 2010 07:42 AM PST Restaurant.com is offering their $25 gift certificates for just $2 when you use the code GOBBLE at checkout. The certificates are valid for one year but the discount price is only good until November 25th! Here are a few restaurants near Disney you might want to check out: House of Blues located in Downtown Disney (try zip 32830) or at Disneyland (try zip 92801) You do have to spend at least $35 before coupon and pay 18% gratuity on your total bill. Garden Grove located at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830) You can eat dinner with some of your favorite Disney characters! You must purchase at least 2 entrees (this is a buffet) and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill. A testimony from a reader…. I ate at the Garden Grove at Disney two weeks ago. We had dinner around 7:30 , and Pluto and Goofy were both there and VERY ATTENTIVE to our kids. The food was excellent! but a word of warning…this is a buffet and it's pretty pricey, about $31 per adult, and if you have a ten year old child, they are considered an adult. So it was a pricey meal even with the coupon, But the food was great and the Characters were awesome! so it was worth it. Goofy even picked up my daughters napkin off the floor and placed it on my daughters lap. Too sweet! Todd’s English bluezoo at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830) You must purchase 2 entrees and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill. Shula’s Steak House at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830) You do have to spend at least $35 before coupon and pay 18% gratuity on your total bill. Kimons at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830) You must purchase 2 entrees and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill. A suggestion from a reader… I'd highly recommend Giordano's. It's Kissimmee location has just been added to Restaurant.com listing – we're so excited! It's just a short distance from Disney & so so good. Keep in mind that these do not work like traditional gift cards, they are more like a 50% off coupon. Each restaurant has it’s own fine print on what you need to purchase in order to use these gift certificates. I’ve seen them where you have to spend $35 and pay 18% gratuity to use the $25 gift certificate. However, this is still a great deal and a great discount and you can print them right from your computer. An instant gift. Just make sure you read the fine print. Plus they usually don’t expire for a year! Another reader suggests calling the restaurant before you buy the certificate to make they still accept it.

Day 20 of No Dining Out November Posted: 20 Nov 2010 07:09 AM PST Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do! At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend at a restaurant(s) of their choice! The rules: 1. You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habits, you can participate! 2. You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the gift card. 3. The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not. 4. You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another! 5. Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great! 6. Here is a thought… consider keeping a tally of what you would of spent this month. For example, if you really want to go out for breakfast this morning and you resist… write that down! You could then donate that money to a food bank or deposit it into your fund! 7. Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here. My progress: No dining out for us yesterday. :) How are you doing?
