Angry Birds Christmas Edition for iPhone, iPad and Android Coming on Dec 11

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 10:29 AM PST

Angry Birds has blitzkrieged the iTunes App Store, Android Market and several other app repositories, and it is showing no signs of slowing down. Rovio Mobile has stated that they don’t want to do a sequel, but they have been cleverly tapping into the cash cow that is Angry Birds with special holiday editions. After an immensely popular Halloween edition, Rovio is now preparing to release a special Christmas edition of Angry Birds.

Angry-Birds-Christmas-Edition

According to the Finnish site MTV3 (and PocketLint), Angry Birds Christmas edition will be launched on Dec 11. Although the website confirms simultaneous releases for both iPhone and iPad, it is silent on the availability of the special edition on Android.

Given that Android users had missed out on the Halloween edition of Angry Birds, I requested confirmation from Rovio through Twitter. In response to my query regarding the availability of Angry Birds Christmas Edition on Android, @roviomobile tweeted back “and not only that;-)”, which pretty much confirms that Angry Birds Christmas Edition will be available on Android. The tweet also hints that something more is in the pipe for Android users. Based on the information available at hand, I am guessing that we will be seeing the “Mighty Eagle” make an appearance on Android. What do you think? Are you also an Angry Birds addict? Will you be willing to pay for a Christmas edition of Angry Birds?

Motorola Droid X Gets Android 2.2.1 Unofficially

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 09:57 AM PST

It was a few days ago that the Google Nexus One got a small update to Android 2.2.1. The update was a pretty minor one and mainly aimed at fixing bugs with the present firmware. Even though this update is a small one, owners of different handsets are already impatient for their share of Android 2.2.1 love. The good news is that at least the Droid X owners can have their Android 2.2.1 share of love. Droid_X_2.2.1

Motorola has not released an official Android 2.2.1 update for the Droid X but the modding community unofficially has. They have released a custom ROM based on Android 2.2.1 for the Droid X. However, Droid X owners need to make sure that their handset is rooted before proceeding with the update process. The process is quite complicated and risky so users should make sure they know what they are doing before updating their phone.

Users are also warned that they won't be able to downgrade to Android 2.2, once they have flashed the Android 2.2.1 update on their handset. Droid X owners can find the step to update their handset to Android 2.2.1 here. If after the update users are facing any kind of rooting issues, then they need to use the z4root application on their handset to get back root access.

Motorola Defy To Get Android 2.2 Update In Q2, 2011

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 09:54 AM PST

Motorola has today announced that their rugged and water resistant Android handset – the Motorola Defy – will get its Android 2.2 love for sure. The only downside is that Motorola is expected to roll out the update in the second quarter of the next year i.e. sometime in Q2 of 2011. Sadly, the company also announced that the Motorola Milestone XT720 won't get an update to Android 2.2 at all and will remain stuck with Android 2.1 forever.

Motorola_Defy

Here is the official announcement from Motorola :

Today we can confirm that in EMEA we plan to upgrade Motorola DEFY to Android 2.2 (FroYo) in the second quarter of next year and that Milestone XT720 will remain on Android 2.1. Anyone looking for information about this and updates for other regions should go to our forum.

Hopefully, Motorola won't delay the Android 2.2 update for the Defy to Q3. If my memory serves me right, no manufacturer has been able to roll out the Froyo update for their handset on their scheduled date.

Opera Mobile 10.1 Arrives on Symbian

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 05:50 AM PST

Barely a day after Opera 11 Beta was released, Opera Software has launched Opera Mobile 10.1 final for Symbian (Symbian^3, and Symbian S60 3rd and 5th editions). “Powerful smartphones deserve an equally powerful browser,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Opera Mobile 10.1 today brings the best mobile browsing experience to the world’s most popular smartphone platform.”

Opera-Mobile-10-Symbian

Opera 10.1 for Symbian features JIT (just-in-time) compilation for Carakan JavaScript Engine, which is not yet available on Opera Mobile for Android. JIT should significantly boost Opera’s JavaScript rendering speed. In fact, Opera is claiming that the latest build is nine times faster than its predecessor on SunSpider benchmark. Like its desktop counterpart, Opera Mobile uses Presto rendering engine and Vega graphics library to offer a powerful web-browsing experience.

Opera-Mobile-10-Symbian-Geolocation

Also new in Opera 10.1 is Geolocation, which enables web applications like Maps to directly grab your current location (obviously, with your permission).

Opera Mobile 10.1 retains all the usual goodies we have come to love from Opera, including powerful tabbed browsing, search bar, history, visual speed dial, find in page, bookmarks, online sync, password manager and Opera Turbo. You can download it from opera.com/mobile or by browsing to m.opera.com from your mobile browser.
