NoodleCast #43: Live Rationally Selfish Webcast

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PST

On Sunday, I hosted another live webcast where I answered people's questions on practical ethics as part of my Rationally Selfish Q&A series. The live webcast consists of me broadcasting on video, with a live text chat. That's now available as an audio podcast.

At present, these webcasts are held at 9 am MT (8 am PT, 10 am CT, 11 am ET). You can submit questions for next week in the comments on this post. To join the webcast at the appointed hour, go here: Rationally Selfish Q&A.

As for last Sunday's webcast, I'd ask you to remember that I'm still experimenting with this format, and I have much to learn. Hence, please expect rough edges!

Questions Discussed
  • What is the proper etiquette in regards to dealing with a deeply irrational person you have to deal with temporarily? Especially when his irrationality interferes with your value pursuits to some extent.
  • My father and his side of the family are very religious while I am not. Is it moral for me to jeopardize my relationship with them to share the countless fallacies and inhumanities that is religion? If so, how does one go about this process?
  • If you were physically abused as a child, but have grown up and "gotten over it," is it still reasonable to demand justice if only in the form of refusing to deal with the abuser?
  • What are your thoughts on using philosophy rather than psychology for therapy?
  • A topic that has come up off and on over the past several months in the Objectivist blogosphere is the concept of "Value Density". Can you suggest how one would go about applying this concept to a specific event or area of life, such as a vacation?"
  • Under what circumstances is it reasonable for a teacher to demand from his prospective students that his lessons be kept confidential?
The video for the webcast is only available for those attending live. After the webcast is completed, you can listen, download, or subscribe to the audio podcast.

Rationally Selfish Webcast: Questions Wanted

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 07:38 AM PST

As always, I'm hungry for questions on practical ethics to answer in my upcoming Rationally Selfish Webcast on Sunday morning!

I'm not using Google Moderator this week, as I'm weary of its too-strict limit on the length of questions. I'll be hunting for a new and better tool, but in the meantime, I'm just going to use the comments on this very post. You can submit your own questions. You can add your own spin on someone else's question. Or you can just hit the "like" button to recommend a question.

Since you have some extra space, don't just ask the bare-bones question, but rather give me some relevant background details. However, please remember that I must read your question on the webcast. So keep it relatively short -- about 100 to 200 words. Oh, and write as clearly as possible.

I'll answer five to ten of the most interesting and popular questions on Sunday's webcast. If your question isn't answered, you can re-submit it next week.

I'll be posting the podcast of Sunday's Rationally Selfish Webcast shortly.
