Google Docs Goes Mobile: Adds Edit Support for Android, iPhone and iPad

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 12:02 PM PST

If anyone believes in the power of the web, it’s Google. The Mountain View, California based internet giant has been one of the most vocal champions of web applications. So, it's not surprising that some of the best web applications are from Google. Google Docs might be no match for Microsoft Office’s complexity, but it’s certainly good enough for many organizations. Unfortunately, Google Docs is restricted to the desktop. Mobile users can open documents in their browser, but can’t edit them. However, this is about to change.

Google has announced that it will begin rolling out edit support for English users of Docs over the next few days. Supported devices include Android phones (Froyo or newer), iPhone (iOS 3 or newer) and iPad. Android users will also be able to take advantage of the inbuilt voice recognition feature. Check out the video below to see Google Docs Mobile in action.

Android Market Maintenance Tomorrow, Browser Based Market Coming?

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 09:25 AM PST

The Android market is all set to go through a major six-hour maintenance on November 18 from 10PM to 4AM Pacific Standard Time. During the update period, the developers console will only be in view-only mode. Without a doubt, this maintenance points that Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is approaching its release date fast. Now, the folks over at Phandroid are reporting that this market update will be the initial step from Google to rollout a browser based Android market.

After the maintenance update, Android developers will need to upload a high resolution icon of their application along with a link to the promotional YouTube video, if available. Google may also add initial support for third party payments like PayPal.

It is more or less confirmed that Google will soon be allowing Android users to purchase apps from the Android Market through PayPal.

Sony Ericsson X10 To Get Multi-Touch Support By Q1, 2011

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 08:58 AM PST

In the first couple of quarters of this year, there was a huge fiasco about the multi-touch capabilities of the Sony Ericsson X10. At first, Sumit Malhotra from Sony Ericsson said that the X10 might get multi-touch support in a future software update but soon Rikard Skogberg said that the X10 lacks the hardware to support multi-touch.

Now, Sony Ericsson have announced in a blog post that the X10 will be getting an OTA (Over-The-Air) software update by Q1 of 2011 which will enable basic multi-touch (pinch-to-zoom) support on the phone. X10

The blog post clearly states that the X10 hardware is still not capable of multi-touch support. Some engineer( s) over at Sony Ericsson managed to change the driver and firmware so as to make the touch digitizer accept some basic multi-touch gestures.

However, the multi-touch gesture is still not perfect. A strange behavior is bound to happen when in a multi-touch gesture movement the two fingers cross each other or the X-axis and the Y-axis.

So, Sony Ericsson has decided to enable multi-touch gesture only in the web browser and Google Maps. Third party applications will also be able to make use of this limited multi-touch support on the X10.

It was only a few days ago that someone over at XDA forums had managed to enable basic multi-touch support on the X10. I think Sony Ericsson noticed this hack and are now going to use it to enable multi-touch on the X10.
