Samsung GT-i9200 Firmware Leaks

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 08:55 PM PST

There have been a lot of rumors about the existence of the Samsung-Google Android experience phone. However, the leaked images of the phone and its 'special' appearance on the Web 2.0 conference in the hands of Eric Schmidt have given ample proof of its existence.  It has also been confirmed that the Nexus S will be running on Android 2.3 when launched and will sport NFC capabilities.

However, what is still not known about the phone are its internal hardware specifications. Now, a firmware of the Samsung GT-i9200 has leaked on the Internet. It is still unclear whether this GT-i9200 is the Nexus S or the next high-end phone from Samsung. Devs over at XDA forums have been digging around with the files of the firmware and it looks like the handset will be using the RFS file system.

The RFS file system is one of the major culprits of the lag on the Galaxy S series of handsets. Other confirmed specifications of the phone are that it will sport Bluetooth 3.0, FM Radio and the camera module is from Konica Minolta Camera, Inc.

A senior member – Richthofen – has however said that the GT-i9200 will be powered by the S5PC110 AP and feature the PowerVR SGX540 GPU. The resolution of the handset will be the same as on the other Galaxy S handsets at WVGA (800×480).

Dell To Close Up Shop On Mobile Business Division

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 11:28 AM PST

It was only recently that Dell threw their might behind Windows Phone 7 and introduced a host of devices including the fabled Venue Pro, a 4.1" capacitive touch sliding portrait QWERTY keyboard and the Streak, an Android OS tablet featuring a 5" touch screen, full GPS capabilities and 3G connectivity.

Despite the launch of new smartphones running Windows Phone 7, Dell is said to be closing down their Mobile Division, coinciding with the resignation of Ron Garriques. Garriques, who has been with Dell since 2007 and is currently the Communication Solutions President, will continue with the company as a "consultant" in the interim as Dell sorts out their future plans for the mobile market.

Hopefully Dell will continue to support their existing handsets, and move towards consolidating their departments to offer consumers more devices.

T-Mobile Galaxy Tab Flashed to Make Phone Calls

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 09:23 AM PST

The incredibly clever modders over at XDA developers have managed to find out a way to enable phone calls on the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

It started with a forum member, Jyveafk, rooting his Galaxy Tab and trying to install the phone.apk module on it. After failing quite a few times, and some trial and error, Jyveafk finally managed to flash his Galaxy Tab to enable phone calls on it.

The method is a bit complex and is recommended only for experienced flashers. You will need the Odin3 Flasher to carry out the mod. For more details, check out this detailed tutorial – US T-Mobile Galaxy Tab flashed to make phone calls – Tutorial. The method works only on EDGE for now.

Acer Liquid E Android 2.2 Update Out Now

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 07:45 AM PST

Acer_liquid_eAcer is a newbie in the mobile industry. The first few Android based handsets from the company did not manage to set the sales chart on fire. However, Acer is still providing support to all those people who showed faith in the company and brought their Acer Liquid E handset.

The testimony to this is the fact that Acer has released the Android 2.2 update for the Liquid E. As for now, the update is available only in Canada for the carrier branded Rogers and Fido Liquid E handsets.

The update is not in the usual OTA (Over-The-Air) form. Users need to download the update and install it on their phone manually. Acer has provided pretty detailed steps on how to install the update so hopefully users won't face any problems while installing the update.

Acer Liquid E handset owners can download the update from here.

Nexus One Gets An OTA Update – FRG83D

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 02:19 AM PST

The official Google Android Developer phone – the Nexus One – has just received an OTA (Over-The-Air) software. Sadly, the OTA is not the Gingerbread update which many of you have been hoping for. The OTA update weighs 1.3MB and bumps up the Nexus One software from FRG83 to FRG83D.  The OTA update basically aims contains bug fixes and patches.

Here is the small change-log (thanks to Paul) -:

  • Updates to the core and framework JARs
  • Updates to the Dalvik VM and Webcore libraries
  • Updates to the Email, Google Services Framework and Market packages.
  • A couple of other very minor patches

It is still unclear whether the Nexus One loses its root after the OTA update or not. Nexus One owners who can’t wait for the OTA, can download and install it manually from here.
